DO ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES HURT? IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

A misconception about acupuncture is that it hurts. Acupuncture doesn't hurt. Most people treated don't feel anything. The acupuncture needles are extremely fine, almost like hair. Often people report a sensation after the insertion of the needle. This sensation is described as Qi, which is a positive response.

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

The original theory behind acupuncture treatment is that the healthy functioning of the body is governed by the flow of “qi” (force of life) through a system of channels under the skin. When this flow of qi is impaired, illness occurs. By inserting fine needles at various points along the channels, the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved.

CAN I HAVE ACUPUNCTURE WITH WESTERN MEDICAL TREATMENT?

Acupuncture can, and often is used in conjunction with western medical treatment. It does not negatively interfere with other forms of medicine. It is important, however, to tell your practitioner what other forms of treatment you are receiving.

WHAT HAPPENS ON MY FIRST VISIT?

During a consultation, a practitioner will take a full medical history and be looking to find the cause of any problems or imbalances. From there a selection of points will be chosen. The acupuncturist will then insert several very fine needles which will be left in position.

WHO CAN HAVE ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT?

There is no limitation in terms of age, sex or condition regarding acupuncture treatment. Very young or extremely old can be treated. All types of conditions can be treated – chronic or acute, severe or mild, mental or physical. Pregnant women are prime candidates for TCM and much can be done to promote both ante-natal and post-natal care of mother and baby.
